Dear [Employer]:
As you may be aware, in addition to being a student
at [educational institution], I am
also a
member of the Reserve Force, serving with [unit name] in
[community]. As such, I have recently
been asked to participate in a United Nations peacekeeping mission in
[location] as a [position].
[Brief description of nature of mission or
operation, if appropriate, especially if it domestic or
local to the employer's community.]
Reservists such as myself serve in the United States
Air Force, usually on a part-time basis. It
would be my wish to be able to say yes to this offer of short-term, full-time
service. However, as
this is a 10-month tour of duty, I could do so only with your consent. I
therefore request a leave
of absence from my academic commitments to participate in this peacekeeping
mission with the
United States Air Force.
The dates of my absence would be from
[date] to
[date]. I would not hesitate to say
that the skills
and knowledge I will gain from such a unique experience represent a once in a
lifetime
investment opportunity for personal and professional development. It is also an
exceptional
opportunity to contribute to America's international peacekeeping efforts and to
enhance my
potential for civilian employment following graduation.
I hope that you will give this request your most
serious consideration. Your investment in my
military activities also represents an investment in my civilian future.
I would appreciate an opportunity to discuss methods of
ensuring that I maintain my level of
studies during that time. Please let me know when we can meet to discuss this
issue. If you
would like more information on this peacekeeping mission or the Reserve Force in
general, I
would be happy to discuss this further with you. You may also contact
[rank, name, position of
Commanding Officer or designate at xxx-xxx]. [I thank you for the support you
have given me in
the past and hope you will give this request serious consideration.]
Sincerely,
